Suciwati, is the widow of Munir Said Thalib. Munir, one of the country's leading human rights campaigners poisoned on a Garuda Airlines flight in 2004. Since Munir’s murder, Suciwati has spearheaded the relentless pursuit for the resolution of this case. Human rights groups and independent observers believe that behind the poisoning lies complex links to the Indonesian intelligence agency, BIN. Despite receiving anonymous threats and pressure to cease, Suciwati and Komite Aksi Solidaritas Untuk Munir (KASUM), Action Committee in Solidarity for Munir, continue their struggle for justice. After three years the investigation finally seems to be moving towards uncovering the persons who planned the murder. In the beginning of 2008 the Supreme Court convicted former Garuda employee Pollycarpus Budihari Priyanto and the former head of Garuda Indra Setiawan for involvement in the murder. In June 2008, the police detained former state intelligence agency (BIN) deputy chief Muchdi Purwopranjono. Suciwati stated publicly that Muchdi was just the executor and demanded that the police also arrest his boss, Hendropriyono, who she believes to be the mastermind behind the assassination. PBHI

In recent years, Papua has become one of PBHI's focuses and many Papuans have enlisted as volunteers. The organization has been a prime actor in the investigations and defence of many human rights cases. Recently, PBHI lawyers defended the accused of the 16 March Abepura trial in Papua and the Timika Mile 62 trial, which took place in Jakarta. PBHI's lawyer Maya Lauren, as well as a PBHI volunteer Herman Sewaki traveled to Europe in November to discuss human rights issues and raise awareness of the plight of many Papuans. WALHI works to defend Indonesia's natural world and local communities from injustice carried out in the name of economic development. As a result, WALHI members have recently come under threat in areas where they are teaming up with small communities and indigenous populations to struggle against perpetrators of environmental exploitation and injustice.
